Message From Our CEO – Tina Carter

Although the weather may not feel like fall quite yet, I’m looking forward to the days when cool breezes and fall colors transform the world around us. That transformation reminds all of us of the constant change in our lives and the ability we must create change for others. It’s empowering and humbling. It’s exciting and a bit scary. We all face change constantly, and we depend on the support of friends, family, and organizations like the YMCA to navigate that change successfully. I’m so proud to know that the work being done by our staff, volunteers, and teams provide a safety net for all people in our community to manage and thrive in the transformations of our lives, both big and small.

There has been much work done and is still being done within our YMCA. The new community room will be offering classes for our members soon, our downtown Men’s shower room is getting a much-needed facelift and we have our gymnasium that will be getting work completed in late 2023 early 2024. The end of this year is bringing about big change for our Vernon members, with a move into our newly renovated space at Griffin Motors, we have gotten off to a slow start because we wanted the Taj Mahal but realized we needed to scale back a bit. We are very excited that we will be able to offer Child Watch, an area for our Trainers and a HIIT area for those of you who are looking for something a little different than the normal cardio or strength training. We will give some sneak peak photos as we go along, watch our Facebook page for updated photos.

We have our annual Purse Bingo on October 14th at 7PM at Active Aging which will support our Scholarship Campaign, a campaign that supports local families with membership, early learning and afterschool care, veterans, and our food distribution program. We hope to see many of you there!

This year so far has been full of projects and many changes with many more to come, please be patient as we navigate through all of our projects, we appreciate your support and understanding.

Thank you and God Bless,
Tina

Hiring and Volunteering at the Y

We Are Hiring!
Imagine going to work knowing that what you do each day positively affects the lives of the people in your community. Working at the Y, you’ll discover more than a job – you’ll enjoy the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around you. The Meadville Family YMCA currently has several part-time and full-time positions open. Check out our Facebook page and website to see our current open positions!

Volunteers Needed!
The Meadville Family YMCA is a volunteer-founded, volunteer-led organization. Working locally, we focus on empowering young people, improving health and well-being, and inspiring action in and across communities. By bringing people together from different backgrounds, perspectives and generations, we ensure that we all have access to the opportunities, relationships and resources necessary to learn, grow and thrive. With a focus on developing the potential of youth, improving individual health and well-being, and giving back to and supporting communities, your participation brings about meaningful change not just within yourself, but also in your community. When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in creating significant change right in your own neighborhood. Volunteers are essential to the work we do and the goals we want to achieve in our community.

Meadville Family YMCA Announces the Kickoff of Its Capital Campaign!

We at the Meadville Family YMCA would like to announce our 2023 Capital Campaign. We have hopes to raise $500,000 to support the renovation of the Downtown Meadville YMCA building for all our members. These funds will allow for needed upgrades and improvements to our facility. The project will renovate the pool area turning it into a multipurpose space for use of fitness classes, family events, and much more. We will also replace the 1960’s gymnasium floor, renovate the men’s shower area, and turn the current steam-room into a sauna.

The Campaign is structured so that members can contribute to one or more specific target areas of your choice through naming and recognition opportunities. “The generosity of our community continues to amaze us”, added Tina Carter, CEO of the Meadville Family YMCA.  We rely on the kindness of individual donors, grants, and foundations. Financial pledges have been received, but more is needed to reach our goal.

The Y is excited to partner with Ainsworth Foundation for match donations of up to $100,000. The Lang Foundation will also match your donation given to the Meadville YMCA Capital Campaign. So far, we have raised $220,000! We would like to thank all our generous donors and hope the community will continue to give to help us reach our goal.

Training sessions consist of drills followed by resistance training relative to their appropriate age group and development.

Drill Types:

  • Mobility

Classes: Fitness Class & Pilates Reformer Orientations and More!

We understand that walking into a fitness class can be intimidating. As a member of our Y, you receive complimentary Pilates Reformer and Fitness Class Orientations. These are designed to have you meet one-on-one or in small groups with an instructor to go over the basics of each class and familiarize yourself before attending one of our classes. This is free for members with a limit of one per class.

Fitness Class Orientation
A Fitness Class Orientation session runs approximately 20 – 30 minutes in length and will be outside of the original class time. The session will be designed to introduce a member to the format of the class, learn basic moves, familiarize a member with any equipment used in class and answer any questions members have. This will be followed with the instructor leading the members through a “mini class” to show you how a typical class will run. Register by visiting Class Orientations – Meadville YMCA!

Pilates Reformer Class Orientation
A Pilates Reformer Class Orientation session runs approximately 50 – 60 minutes in length and will be outside of the original class time. It will provide you with the basics of using the Reformer and find settings that work best for you. This will be followed with moves to help you get a feel for the Reformer and then a “mini class” with basic movements used in classes. This is for members new to Pilates or needing a refresher as it is required before attending your first Pilates Reformer Class with us at the Vernon Y. Message From Our CEO – Tina Carter

CEO of ymca

Dear friends, The holiday season is upon us, and it has been a very busy year for our crew at the Y. In 2022 we were able to complete many projects in our Downtown facility. Many of these projects were not visible to our members but were well needed. The projects completed are as follows:

  • New Roof
  • Upgraded all electrical boxes
  • New windows on the second floor as well as upgraded flooring and bathroom
  • Secured funding to replace all the windows on the first floor including the gym and pool area, the windows have been ordered and hopes that we get a few in before winter is upon us. If this doesn’t happen it will be spring of 2023 for installation.
  • Painted the front of the building, added new lights and a new sign
  • Added AC/heating units in all childcare space

We were fortunate to have secured funding for all these projects and there was no need for any financing. 2023 will be even busier with the new projects we have planned. We will be kicking off a capital campaign to raise funds for several large projects.  The projects included are:

  • Renovation of the pool space to create a multipurpose room that will be used for fitness classes, family events, free dinners and so much more.
  • New floor in our gymnasium
  • Renovation of the men’s shower room
  • Conversation of steam room to sauna
  • New ramp in the front of the building

These new projects will total almost $500,000 and we are excited to announce that we have already raised $232,000 towards these projects. If you have a passion for one of our projects listed and would like to donate funds to a specific project, we will apply your donated funds to that area of improvement.  Please feel free to email Tina, [email protected] or Hannah, [email protected] with any questions.

Thank you,

Tina Carter, CEO

Message From Our CEO – Tina Carter

CEO of ymca

It is happening, the weather is changing, I see the leaves already turning colors.  To say the least I am not ready.

August has been very busy for the Meadville Family YMCA.  We have hired some new staff, we have planned for our summer camp kids to head back to school and worked on Fundraising to support our Fairview Fairmont YKids Club Program and our Free Dinner Program.

I want to thank all of our Golf Friends who supported our Annual Art Cocolin Memorial Golf Outing.  We had a very successful golf outing this year with a profit of $7,900, we could not have done this with out all of our sponsors and golfers.

I would also like to thank all of our Crawford Give Donors we had 44 donors give $9,070 in funds to support your local YMCA.  We could not do this without each of you so thank you for supporting your local YMCA.

Summer is leaving and Fall is fast approaching take a few minutes for you – Fall into this new Fall season and do something for you, curl up on your porch with a blanket and hot chocolate and read a book, stop and listen to the sounds of fall, or stop in and see us at the Y, we love having you.

Tina Carter

CEO

Thank You to Our Crawford Gives Donors

The Meadville Family YMCA was excited to participate in the Crawford Gives again this year.  We were beyond excited to share our story in efforts to raise awareness and funding for the community work we do!

This year we highlighted our Summer Parks Program. A collaboration between the YMCA, Creating Landscapes, Women’s Services, and the City of Meadville. Both YMCA staff and Creating Landscapes staff and volunteers are at Huidekoper Park Monday through Friday with programming from 10am-3:30pm. The YMCA staff are committed to providing fun and educational opportunities for the young people in our community. Rosanne and Emily faithfully implement impacting activities to help children explore and learn all while having fun!  These two caring to the child and their needs. Tammy serves FREE lunches to the young people each day at the park also! We are thankful to the community who supported the Walkathon this spring to kick of the Summer Parks program,  and to the PNC Foundation for additional grants that have allowed the program to THRIVE. Monies raised during Crawford Gives will help ensure the sustainability of the program for next summer and hopefully allow us to implement the program at a second park!

A word from Tina Carter. As the CEO, my goal has been to ensure we are filling the gaps within our Crawford County Communities.  It is the support from donors like you that make this commitment from the Meadville Family YMCA possible.  We could not offer these services without our donors and supporters throughout Crawford County.

THANK YOU

We couldn’t have done it without your support

Y Happenings August 2022 Newsletter

We are pleased to share with you all the latest news and happenings from your local Meadville Family YMCA.

Message From Our CEO – Tina Carter

CEO of ymcaOur members may have noticed some great changes at the Y, but I thought I would share some projects that have been completed since the beginning of 2022. The Downtown YMCA location has a new roof, we installed new air conditioning units, replaced some windows on the second floor, put new flooring in on the second floor, and replaced all our electrical boxes (Boy were these outdated!). We are also very excited to announce we will be replacing all the windows on the first floor thanks to funds we received with support from Senator Michelle Brooks. Without her support this would not be possible. Our Vernon Child Care location has received new floors, new windows, and the bathrooms have been renovated. We are very excited to have a new playground installed in August, the children can’t wait and ask every day when it will be coming!

We are working to wrap up our Annual Campaign, we have a goal of $120,000 and are currently at $83,000. Our Annual Campaign is our opportunity to raise funds to support families in our community. These funds are used to serve free dinners in our community. We are currently serving at Fairview Fairmont and at our Linesville location with plans to expand to other communities soon. These funds also support scholarships for families and youth for memberships, childcare, before and after school care as well as our summer day camp program. We are also very excited that we are able support veterans in our community with these donated funds! So, as you can see coming into August, we have had a very exciting and busy year so far. Please watch for Crawford Gives and select the Meadville YMCA as a place you would like to support with a donation to help us reach out goal in 2022.

Thank You to Our Annual Art Cocolin Golf Outing Sponsors

There is still time to join us on August 2nd for a fun-filled 18-holes on the golf course at Venango Valley Inn and Golf Course! All the proceeds from the outing benefit the Meadville Family YMCA’s Annual Campaign.  This 4-man scramble tournament includes a light breakfast before the shotgun start at 10:00 A.M. lunch at the turn, and dinner during the awards ceremony! Cash prizes will be randomly distributed, and drinks are included. Lunch will be provided by our friends from KFC, and dinner will be catered by Smoky Martins BBQ! Plus, we have coffee and donuts from our friends at Dunkin Donuts to start the day off right! Visit our website at Art Cocolin Memorial Golf Outing 2022 – Meadville YMCA to register today. We couldn’t have done it without our multiple sponsors! Summer Food Program

During the school year, The National School Lunch Program and The School Breakfast Program provide nutritional assistance to millions of low-income children every year. But what happens to these kids when summer break comes around? Hunger doesn’t take a break. Without access to daily meals through their schools, millions of children are forced to go hungry during the summer. This is when the Meadville Family YMCA steps up! What started June 20th and will run for 8 weeks, a supervised recreational program is provided for any kids that want to come to Huidekoper Park and participate in safe play. The kids play on the swings, play tennis, have scavenger hunts in the woods; all of which are their favorites! An average of 15 to 16 kids have been showing up every day to play and each time there are more new faces! Also provided is a nutritious, balanced lunch at no cost. Their meal consists of a protein, vegetable, fruit, and 1% milk. The kids love lunch with their favorites being pizza and Taco Tuesday. Being greeted every day by these smiling faces makes my day, especially when I get to hear them yell “The lunch lady is here!”. The Meadville Y is blessed to have volunteers for these programs. We have 4 volunteers that regularly help with the Summer Food Program at Huidekoper Park along with our Veteran John who regularly buys our paper plates. If you are interested in our Y’s volunteering opportunities simply click the link – About – Meadville YMCA – then download and complete the Volunteer Application to return it to the Downtown Y to learn more!

Back to School Tips to Ease Anxiety

1. “A week or two before school, start preparing children for the upcoming transition by getting back to school year routines, such as a realistic bedtime and selecting tomorrow’s clothes” (“5 Tips to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety”).
2. “Arrange play dates with one or more familiar peers before school starts. Research shows that the presence of a familiar peer during school transitions can improve children’s academic and emotional adjustment” (“5 Tips to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety”).
3. “Visit the school before the school year begins, rehearse the drop-off, and spend time on the playground or inside the classroom if the building is open. Have the child practice walking into class while the parent waits outside or down the hall” (“5 Tips to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety”).
4. “Come up with a prize or a rewarding activity that the child could earn for separating from mom or dad to attend school” (“5 Tips to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety”).
5. “Validate the child’s worry by acknowledging that, like any new activity, starting school can be hard but soon becomes easy and fun” (“5 Tips to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety”).

Join us on Fridays from 11:30am-12:15pm in the Aerobics Studio at our Vernon Y location! Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline originating in ancient India. Y Happenings May 2022 Newsletter

April showers bring May flowers. Most people are familiar with this saying. The month of May is filled with the sounds of birds, the smell of fresh flowers, and summer breezes from time to time. The month marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer. There is growing anticipation for backyard barbecue get-togethers, outdoor activities, and pool parties. School-age children are anticipating the last day of school for summer vacation and parents planning for family get outings after being inside during the cold winter months.

The YMCA has so many opportunities for all ages this summer.  Those school-age kids, who will be bored after the first two weeks with nothing to do, can come to the YMCA Day Camp.  We offer a full day of fun-filled activities, swimming, and field trips.  I won’t mention the two other groups that have a special day coming this May.

Mother’s Day is a special time to show Mom you care.  Show her you care about her physical and mental health; tell her you to care with a YMCA Gift Card that she can use to purchase a membership, Y apparel, or a pass to test out a few classes.   I am sure we will have something she will love.

Memorial Day commemorates the U.S. Soldiers who died in military service. It is important to honor those who served and gave the greatest sacrifice for our freedom.  I also think it is important for us to show our appreciation to those who have served and are still with us but may feel alone and have nowhere to turn.  The Meadville YMCA has a Veterans Program and can help.  Give your veteran a gift of a place to go, bring them to the YMCA, and let us show them how we can help.

I hope that you all have the opportunity to get outside as the weather gets warmer and enjoy your time as a family.

Best Wishes,
Tina Carter

Y Happenings March 2022 Newsletter

Message From Our CEO- Tina Carter
Dear Friends and Supporters,

Spring officially arrives this month! Despite the snow and cold in January and February, I can feel the changes coming our way. I look with anticipation to greener fields, warmer air, and renewed energy.

As you enter our Downtown facility, you may see a variety of work being done.  Our Facility Committee has outline a three-tier priority list that we will be focusing on in 2022-2023. Watch our Facebook feed for before and after photos as we travel through this journey together. This is both exciting and we are hoping the changes will revitalize our Downtown presents.

As the board and staff wrap up our Strategic Plan, our Y continues to invest valuable time, energy, expertise and resources in closing the education achievement gap in the communities that we serve. I am very proud of the work that our staff has done in preparation to engage the children most vulnerable to summer learning loss. In 2021 we were able to offer special emphasis on reading and STEM activities in our Afterschool Programs, and we are excited to announce our Summer Partnership with Seton Catholic School. The YMCA and Seton will work together to provide a summer Y Scholar Program, this program will offer a free five week program to work with the 20 students identified at the most academic risk of failing.

You, our supporters, our donors, our advisors, and our friends, are partners in this work too. You may not be on site each day but your gifts are essential to our success and, truly, to our participants and members. It is a statement of fact that we could not do this work without you. The Meadville YMCA personifies community action and collective effort.  I thank you, and I encourage you to continue to share in our mission and vision.

What is Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health?

“Infant/early childhood mental health” refers to how well a child develops socially and emotionally from birth to five. Understanding infant/early childhood mental health is the key to preventing and treating the mental health problems of very young children and their families. It also helps guide the development of healthy social and emotional behaviors. The Meadville YMCA is committed to helping families by providing information to gain an understanding of their child’s mental health needs and strategies to support them.  The goals of these services include:

  • Build stronger relationships between children and the adults who care for them
  • Teach children how to handle everyday conflicts and challenges
  • Help children develop trust in others and feel empathy, compassion, and generosity
  • Reduce parent/caregiver stress
  • Improve school readiness for children
  • Reduce incidents of challenging behaviors

For more information, or if you have concerns about your child, contact your child’s childcare staff.

Ashley Huffman YMCA Success Story

September 1st, 2020 was the first day I had a group training session with Tate, He had me jump on the scale weighing in at 248.2 lbs and my body fat was 48.8%. After our session, he asked me, “What are your goals?”. My first goal was to lose 20 lbs. and make healthier eating choices. After I reached 20 lbs., 30 lbs. and 50 lbs. I felt like nothing could stop me from achieving larger goals with the support of Tate and his knowledge with Personal Training. As I became in love with the YMCA Gym, getting in shape, getting toned, and having more energy, this allowed me to be completely off my medications.  I was extremely happy with how far I had gotten. I used to struggle with 20 lbs. dumbbells while doing my favorite exercise, bicep curls. I am now using 30 lb. dumbbells!
I love how hard work pays off. I was once in a size 20 and down to a size 14 now. I’ve lost 60 pounds so far in my weight loss journey and to this day I am still dropping weight, body fat, and inches. I’m also gaining muscle and eating healthier. With Tate by my side pushing me to keep going to reach my goals, I was able to win 2 body fat loss competitions back to back at the YMCA. My journey will continue with Tate helping me be the best I can be, being a role model for others. I want to inspire people to be the best they can be!

OUTDOOR PLAY ON WINTER DAYS!

Children need to play outside every day, even in the winter.  Going outside to run, jump, and yell allows children to use large muscle and work of energy.  The fresh air and moving outdoors is heathier for children then keeping them inside where germs can easily be spread.
Winter play enhances brain function.
When a child is outside the movements associated with outdoor winter play beginning with the simple act of walking in snow or on ice (in thick/heavy boots and clothing, no less). Immediately, the brain is fired up! This is a new experience – and a complex one. Legs must go higher, balance is tested.
Winter outdoor play enhance creativity.
Winter brings all new possibilities for creative play, imagination and construction. Forget sand castles, build a frozen snow castle! Or snowmen, snow mountains, snow towers, snow forts, snow volcanoes, snow lanterns, snow sculptures, snow cakes, etc. You can paint the snow, eat the snow, and make angels in the snow. Snow and ice offer kids a never-ending supply of elements for creative little minds.
Winter play enhance physical development and health
Playing in the snow will get the lymphatic system moving helping to clear the body of toxins. Additionally, these outdoor winter play movements involve muscles that may not get as much use in other seasons. The simple act of pulling a sled up a hill gives the legs a magnificent workout.
National and state health and wellness best practice standards recommends daily outdoor play for young children.  Caring for our young children’s national health and safety standards state:

  1. Infants should be taken outside two to three times a day, as tolerated.
  2. Toddlers and preschoolers should be allowed 60 to 90 total minutes of outdoor play.
Caring for Our Children Standards state that children should play outdoors unless weather poses a significant risk and includes wind chill at or below 15 degrees, heat index above 90 degrees and/or an air quality alerts exist.

Training Meadville YMCA

THE TRAINERS CORNER  with Tate Groover

One of the many questions I get asked is what’s a supplement source to use for burning bodyfat. A fantastic natural supplement for people to use is L-carnitine. L-carnitine is a chemical that is made in the human brain, liver, and kidneys. It helps the body turn fat into energy. L-carnitine is important for heart and brain function, muscle movement, and many other body processes.
*Any product recommendation is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please consult your physician prior to starting a supplement of exercise program.

Tate has been with the Meadville Family YMCA for over 9 years and has had a dramatic impact on the lives of many clients here.
