The Meadville YMCA offers a variety of aquatic opportunities including:

Aqua Babies - 6 months up to 3 years
Preschool Classes (5 levels) - 3 years up to 6 years
Youth Classes (5 levels) - 6 years  up to 13 years
Adult Swim Classes (3 levels) - 13 years and up
Competitive Swim Team - 5 years up to 18 years
Recreational Swim League - 5 years up to 10 years
Water Fitness Classes -17 classes per week to choose from - You do not need to be a swimmer


Meet the Aquatics Director: Laura Singo 

Laura has been involved in YMCA swimming for 13 years.  She graduated from Edinboro University with a degree in Health & Physical Education & a Minor in Coaching. Laura knows the commitment level needed by both the swimmer and their family to achieve success of the YMCA program.

Infant/Preschool Progressive Lessons

 

Classes with Parent Participation

Aqua Babies (6 months UP to 3 years)

Activities that allow children to  become comfortable while feeling safe, with a parent in the water. Children learn basic movements like kicking, stroking with the arms, and getting use to having their faces near or in the water. These basics build the foundation for later swimming techniques.  Saturdays are members only.  If there is room  avaliable the session will be opened to nonmembers the week of the new session.

Tadpole (3 Years UP TO 5  years)

This class is a transition between Aqua Baby and Pike.  The same skills are taught as in the Pike class but the child feels safe with the parent in the water.  Children that are uncomfortable with other adults or fearful of the water would benefit greatly.

Cost: Member $20 

                                                                                          Non-member $38

                                                         Monday 5:15pm-5:45pm or 5:55pm-6:25pm  (5:15pm class will be opened if later class is full)

PRESCHOOL PROGRESSIVE LESSONS

           Cost: Member $20

           Non-member $38
The YMCA uses instructional aids that assist the children to float. The floats are decreases as the student’s ability and confidence increases. As students progress through each level, they will receive a ribbon for the level they complete.

Preschool (ages 3 Years up to 5 years)


 

                                                                         Beginner Pike: 

Students have little or no experience. They learn skills like blowing bubbles, floating, and paddling on their front back and side.

                                                                   

Monday 5:15pm-5:45pm  or  5:55pm-6:25pm    (5:55pm class will be opened if later class is full)

                                                                         Tuesday 10:30am-11:00am 

                                                                         Saturday 9:00am-9:30am  or  9:35am-10:05am   (9:35am class will be opened if later class is full)

                                                                         Advanced Pike:

                                                                        Students learn the same skills as the Beginner Pikes but they are starting to swim without floatation, are comfortable with                                                                                  their face in the water, and can jump in with assistance.

For those that have mastered the Pike level. They are comfortable jumping in the pool unassisted and paddling 5 feet on their front back and side 5 feet.

For those who have mastered the Eel level. They are comfortable swimming 15 feet on their front back and side unassisted, and ready to learn the foundations of backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke.

For those who have mastered the Ray Level. They are comfortable swimming 20 feet on their front back and side. This is for the advanced preschool swimmer working on developing good techniques for strokes and dives.

YOUTH (ages 6 years UP TO 12)

 LEVEL I

Children will learn to paddle on the front, back, and side for a length of the pool with a floatation device and for a width of the pool without the floatation device.

 LEVEL II

Children will learn front, back, and side alternating paddle stroke; swim a length of the pool using front and back symmetrical paddle stroke.

                                                       Level III

Children learn freestlye, backstroke, breaststroke; sidestroke with scissor kick; and elementary backstroke.

Stroke and Conditioning for Youth

Children will learn and improve techniques in the four competitive strokes (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Buterfly), dives and competitive turns while building endurance.   This class is great for youth considering joining the Meadville YMCA Swim Team (MYST) or want to do fitness swimming.  For levels Minnow, Fish, and Flying Fish.

Adaptive  Lessons   (Ages 3 - 12 years)

1 to 3 ratio

This class is designed for individuals with special physical, mental, or social needs. The focus will be on establishing proficiency in as many swimming skills as the student is able to accomplish.  If the swimmer is in need needs further assistance a care giver will be required to enter the water with them.

Adult Lessons (ages 13 and up)

Cost:  Members $26

            Non Members $49
Our adult lessons are individualized according the goals set by each participant, the first day.

 

 

BEGINNER/Intermediate

This is geared to your personal goals whether it is to get over your fear of the water, gain confidence, learn to float and swim.  The hardest part is signing up and getting to class the first day.


                                                                  Wednesday 10:15am – 11:00am     or      7:50pm - 8:35pm

                                                                  Nothing else is in the pool during the class on Wednesday night.


Advanced Swimming AND CONDITIONING

Class includes drills, take home work outs, instruction to improve stroke techniques, endurance and learn other strokes. Ideal for fitness swimmers and triathletes who want to become more efficient.  Must be able to swim 4 lengths without stopping.

WATER FITNESS

Water workouts expend more energy than similar land based exercises due to the water resistance. The average person burns 450 - 700 calories during one hour of aerobic exercise.

Aqua Aerobics

This low intensity water fitness class includes cardiovascular conditioning, muscular endurance and flexibility. Participants do not need to be able to swim.

SilverSplash®

This is part of the SilverSneakers® Program. It is a low impact shallow water class geared to seniors. You do not have to be in the SilverSneaker® program to attend.

Deep Water Fitness

A terrific deep water workout. Participants do not need to be able to swim as a floatation belt is used during the workout. Strengthen, tone and tighten your muscles; improve lung and heart capacities; refine balance and coordination as you perform these exercises. A great stress reliever. This is a medium to high intensity water fitness class conducted completely in the deep end of the pool.

                                                                  Tuesday and Thursday 6:00pm - 6:45pm    and   Thursdays 1:00pm - 1:45pm

                                                                  Saturday 8:45am - 9:30am


Water Fitness

The perfect aerobic workout from beginner to advanced. Even if you have never worked out in the water before. The large movements of the legs and arms provide the aerobic workout to burn fat and strengthen the cardiovascular system. Enjoy an invigorating workout in the waters bouyant - nearly gravity free - exercise environment. This class incorporates deep and shallow water exercises; low impact workouts including kicking and wall exercises, abdominal moves, upper-body resistance training and stretching. No swimming skills required.

                                                                  Tuesday and Thursday 6:45pm - 7:30pm

                                                                  Saturday  8:00am-8:45am


Open Water Exercise  3/4 of the pool (Flags in the shallow end to 9ft)

Open for members to come and use the pool for individual exercise. An Instructor is avaliable for assistance and guidance.

MEADVILLE YMCA SWIM TEAM (MYST)

It is all about Fun, Friendships, Team and Individual IMPROVEMENTS!

The Meadville YMCA Swim Team is a competitive swim team comprised of youth ages 5 through high school.  The mission of MYST is to allow each swimmer the opportunity to achieve his/her maximum potential in competitive swimming and to contribute to team excellence.

Swim meets help children and young adults learn sportsmanship and discipline while helping to develop athleticism and competitiveness. Meets are held on Saturdays with other area YMCA teams in the league. Swim practices and all home meets are held at the MARC.

Meet Coach Tim


Coach Tim brings with him a great deal of competitive swim experience as both a competitor as well as a coach. He has been a life-long swimmer, holding many team records in both high school and college. He continued his swimming as an adult in the Masters Swim program and was a top five finisher in the USMS Summer National Championship meet.
Coach Tim has been utilizing his knowledge and experience to inspire young swimmers for more than 10 years. He has worked with children of all ages through several teams and camps to develop effective training techniques, focus on proper stroke mechanics and improve overall performance. He’s excited to be involved with the MYST team and is looking forward to working with our swimmers this year!

Duel Meets

Are on Saturdays and begin October 25th.

Invitationals
Begin in Novemberand are optional meets to attend for an entry fee.  This fee is paid to the team holding the invitational.

THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE YMCA COMPETITIVE MYST SWIM TEAM

 

BEGINS WITH A STROKE EVALUATION AND FUN DAY TUESDAY OCTOBER 14TH AT 6:30PM


Ages 5 - 12 that are comfortable in 4 foot of water and comfortable with thier face in the water


8 WEEK SESSION INCLUDES:

1 night practice per week (8 weeks)
4 "Meets" (weeks 3-7)
1 League Championship Meet (week 8)


BENEFITS OF MINI MAKO SWIM LEAGUE:

  • In-house competition, no traveling
  • Intro to competitive swimming
  • All swim levels welcome
  • Floatation belts will be used if necessary
  • Swimmers will compete in shallow waters

        All swimmers will receive awards and a T-shirt

        The Swim League Pool Party will be held the Sunday after the season at the YMCA.
